Every child experiences their parents' separation differently, and a lot of that difference comes down to age and developmental stage. Understanding what is typical for your child's age can help you respond in a way that genuinely supports them, rather than guessing.

Babies and toddlers (0-3 years)

Very young children cannot understand separation conceptually, but they are highly sensitive to routine and the emotional state of the adults around them. Keeping feeding, sleep and care routines as consistent as possible across both households matters more at this age than any explanation.

Preschool and early primary (4-7 years)

Children this age often think in very concrete, sometimes self-centred terms, and may worry they caused the separation or that a parent leaving the home means that parent no longer loves them. Simple, repeated reassurance, in plain language, that both parents still love them and it is not their fault, matters a great deal here.

Primary school age (8-11 years)

Children in this range increasingly understand what is happening and may express strong feelings, take sides, or worry about practical changes like moving house or school. Being honest about what will and will not change, and involving them in small, age-appropriate decisions, helps restore a sense of control.

Teenagers (12+ years)

Teenagers often have a more adult-like understanding of the separation and may form stronger opinions about each parent's behaviour. It is common for teens to withdraw or throw themselves into friendships and activities outside the home. Respecting their need for some independence, while still checking in consistently, tends to work better than pushing for constant conversation.
